What looks incredible under your bedroom lights can become an entirely different costume once it hits the stage. Learn how lighting, color, fabric, texture, and angle work together—and how to make those elements work for you. In It’s Just a Trick of the Light, longtime burlesque performer, costumer, and producer Scarlett Letter will explore the relationship between stage lighting and costume design. Using samples and a diorama demonstration, Scarlett will show how different lighting choices can transform colors, fabrics, textures, sparkle, shadows, and the overall appearance of a costume onstage. We’ll explore: ● How different colors of light interact with costume colors ● How fabrics and textures respond differently under stage lighting ● Lighting angles and how they affect the way a costume and performer are seen ● Types of stage lighting you may encounter ● What to consider when designing or choosing costumes for a particular lighting environment ● How to create useful lighting requests when submitting tech information ● How to adapt when a venue has limited lighting options and work with what’s available Photos of the demonstrations are encouraged so you can take the information home and use it when planning future acts and costumes. About Scarlett Letter Scarlett Letter has been dazzling audiences since 2004, performing on stages throughout North America and Europe and earning several awards along the way. A longtime fixture of the Los Angeles burlesque scene, she is now one of the driving forces in Reno Burlesque. In addition to performing, Scarlett is an experienced costumer and producer known for a dark, cool beauty reminiscent of Hollywood noir and the classic Hitchcock heroine. With four feet of red hair and miles of bad intentions, Scarlett brings more than two decades of performance experience—and a costumer’s eye—to this hands-on exploration of what happens when costume meets light.
