This month we’re watching The Night They Raided Minsky’s (1968), a comedy set in the colorful world of 1920s New York burlesque. The film follows Rachel Schpitendavel, an innocent young Amish woman who arrives in New York hoping to become a dancer and finds herself at Minsky’s burlesque house. What follows is a wild mix of show business, comedy, romance, censorship, and a police raid — all wrapped around a fictionalized version of one of burlesque’s most enduring legends: the supposed accidental invention of the striptease. The movie draws inspiration from the real Minsky brothers, whose New York burlesque theaters became an important part of American burlesque history. While this is a fictional comedy rather than a documentary, it gives us a very different way to explore the mythology, spectacle, performers, censorship battles, and larger-than-life reputation surrounding the classic burlesque era. For burlesque performers and students, it’s a fun opportunity to see how Hollywood portrayed the world of early 20th-century burlesque — and where entertainment, history, and burlesque folklore collide. You absolutely do not need to be a performer to join us. Anyone interested in burlesque, vintage entertainment, old movies, or simply spending an evening with creative community is welcome. Movie Night is casual and cozy, so bring something to work on while we watch! Rhinestone a costume, sew, knit, sketch, work on a craft, catch up on admin or homework, or bring absolutely nothing and just curl up and enjoy the movie. Come comfy! Pajamas are always welcome. Popcorn is provided. Feel free to bring your own snacks and beverages — alcoholic or non-alcoholic. The space is also 420 friendly. Cell Block #9 is a private residential studio near NC State. The exact address will be provided after registration.

To cancel or reschedule please contact us at least 24 hours before the first class. Minimums & Maximums: Each class has a required minimum and maximum number of students. Minimums are set to ensure instructors are fairly compensated. If a class does not meet minimum enrollment, it may be canceled and all registered students will be notified. No-Shows: Students who do not attend class (no-shows) forfeit their payment. Payments are not refunded or credited. Refunds: We do not provide refunds for any reason. Transfers: Transfers may be offered only with a valid doctor’s note. Without proper documentation, transfers are not permitted. Final Note: Please treat your registration as a commitment to yourself, your classmates, and your instructors. No refunds, no exceptions.
